How Geothermal Units Work

A geothermal HVAC unit is powered by the thermal energy generated and stored in the Earth. The unit is buried underground and the energy it creates is released into the HAVC unit to create hot or cool air to keep the room comfortable.

During the colder months of the year, the heat pumps of these units send water through pipes where soil, warmer rock, or even water underground increases the temperature of the water. The warm water is then sent back through the lines and a mechanism is used to change it to warm heat which is then released.

Almost the same process is applicable for summer as well, but the difference here is the liquid now absorbs the heat of the air and later releases air that is cool, which eventually cools the room.
